The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve. Mark 10:45

In addition to the ordained clergy, there are many laypeople who assist at the altar in our churches as Acolytes, adult Altar Servers, and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC). Fr Timothy Deeter, Liturgy Office Director, will be joined by Mr Michael McKenna, Acolyte at St Mary’s Cathedral, in presenting a program of formation and training for both new and presently-serving ministers.

All prospective Acolytes, EMHCs and Altar Servers must attend these first three sessions:

Session 1 – Lay Ministry: History, Theology & Spirituality
Session 2 – Eucharist & the Mass: Toward a Deeper Appreciation
Session 3 – Service at the Altar: Doing It, and Doing It Well

All prospective Acolytes and EMHCs must also attend this fourth session:

Session 4 – The Ministry of Holy Communion: Practical Pointers

All prospective Acolytes must also attend this fifth sessions:

Session 5 – Companions on the Journey: The Ministry of Acolytes

This program will be conducted at three different venues, on different days and at different times, for everyone’s convenience. It does not matter where or when participants attend the sessions, as long as all the sessions required for their respective ministry are attended. Attendance will be recorded.

Adult altar servers who complete their first three sessions will be eligible to be commissioned by their respective parishes by their parish priests. A certificate of mandate as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion will be given by Cardinal Pell to those completing the first four sessions. They will then be eligible for annual renewal of their commission in their parishes by their parish priests.

Prospective acolytes who have completed all five sessions will be instituted into their ministry by the Archbishop of Sydney, George Cardinal Pell, at St Mary’s Cathedral at 10:30 am Mass.on Sunday, 30th Sept 2007.

NOTE: All presently-serving acolytes, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion and adult altar servers are asked to make every effort to attend these sessions as part of their continuing education in these ministries. There will be an update on the various ministries from The General Instruction of the Roman Missal -- 2003 edition.
The temporary mandate of EMHCs will be extended upon completion of the course.
